Being alone on Valentine's Day doesn't have to be a disaster. Use the time to regroup and give yourself an important gift.

Over the course a lifetime, everyone is going to spend a few Valentine's Days without a significant other.

Your Special Friend on Valentine's Day

If this is your year to be alone, don't despair. You do have a special friend, someone who knows you and cares about what happens to you. Yourself. Don't laugh. One of the biggest secrets about personal happiness is that happy people are friends to themselves.

This Valentine's Day, make it a point to be your own Valentine. You may enjoy the process so much that you'll make a habit of it. This isn't about shopping yourself into the poor house, or eating a tub of ice cream. Being your own Valentine is about helping you to become better in the ways that are important . . .to you.

Turn this Valentine's Day into Your Day

This could be about becoming a better person, getting into shape, tackling that project you've had in mind, or embarking on a new hobby. Give it a little thought and you'll know what you want to do. Now you just need to give yourself permission to do it.

Have you always played with the idea of volunteering, but never actually done something about it? Are you one of those people who is intrigued with the idea of traveling to foreign places, but don’t feel comfortable trying to learn a new language? Do you think night school might be fun, but the idea of getting back into the classroom is too intimidating? It doesn't matter what the goal is, what matters is that a part of you wants to do it and would feel wonderful if you actually did.

Be Your Own Rooting Section

If someone were standing beside you, giving you encouragement, wouldn't you give some of these things you've been thinking about a try? The good news is that this Valentine's Day you can be that person. Turn your disappointment into a plan of action that will make this year memorable as the year you started living instead of waiting. Make a list of goals, not resolutions, but goals about your wants for yourself. You may discover that many of them are within your grasp.

Appreciate Your Support Group

While you are thinking about love, don't forget the people in your life who are there for you the rest of the year. Your parents, pets, and friends make your life meaningful the other 364 days on the calendar, so don't forget about their loving contributions. It may not be the romantic ideal, but the people who help you handle life's ups and downs are the real heroes. Make this their day, too.

Valentine's Day doesn't have to be a disaster if you aren't in a relationship. Make a pact with yourself to be your own best friend. Help yourself to become the person you've always wanted to be. That will make this Valentine's Day a day worth celebrating about.
