Change Your Life

The Big Reason Why Change Doesn't Happen and What To Do About It

© Tamara Hanson

Making change last can be very frustrating, especially when there is no improvement. Change is more than having a plan. It also has to do with what your beliefs are.

Change is a dirty word. Or is it? Those who don’t want it may consider it to be nasty, and for those who desperately want change to occur never get it because no one knows how to initiate it. Feeling stuck, a person will usually grasp the first resource that might help them as if they were gasping for air. Most likely, something has been initiated to bring about change, including watching The Secret, buying self-help books, downloading the latest meditation CD, registering for Vinyasa Yoga, trying hypnotherapy or EFT, all met with little or no change. On top of that, who has the time to do three hours/week of exercise, 30 minutes/day of meditation, or write in a journal hoping that one day they’ll get over any lingering issues?

After all, there are kids to take care of, work to go to, a house to clean, laundry to do, and lunches to make. By the end of the day, a person just wants to vegetate.

Making Lasting Changes

The fact is that deep down the tools are already available to make any lasting changes. The information has been regurgitated over and over and, really, it’s common sense. A person is just waiting for someone else to put it in writing to make it so. Unfortunately, there isn’t a magical machine that will change a person’s life forever. To make changes, one needs to start at a cellular level—and it has to be done on their own.

So, how does change happen in a person’s life without expending a lot of energy or spending money on the latest, greatest book? It all comes down to what a person believes about every single aspect in their lives, digging deep into what is truly keeping them stuck. When they uncover their beliefs surrounding who they are, who others are, money, love, career, the Universe, God, death, etc, they discover many interesting things about themselves.

Change Your Beliefs

Asking the question, “What do I believe?” can begin to put things into perspective. Once that happens, their belief system becomes clearer; it becomes easier to understand why the changes haven’t been made yet. They discover why they are still stuck, still believing the same old stuff that was learnt the moment they entered this world.

Changes in the Body

But, what if the beliefs have been reviewed, the preliminary work has been done, but nothing happens? Then it’s time to take a deeper look. When a person is announcing their beliefs to themselves, is there a sense of doubt lingering in the pit of their stomachs? What is the body saying? Are the shoulders up by the ears or are they relaxed? Is the body rigid? Sick to the stomach? Anything at all?

Deep down, there should be a feeling that what is being said is absolutely 100% believable. If there is still doubt, then it’s back to the drawing board for further review.

By reworking beliefs, the trueness of the self—the absolutely 100% trueness—comes through. By getting past other’s judgments and opinions, the authentic self can begin to radiate.

This is reminiscent of an episode from the show The Gilmour Girls where Lorelai questions her beliefs. She realizes that for 30 plus years her likes, dislikes and beliefs may not have been her own but an influence from her mother. She wasn’t even sure if she truly liked Pop Tarts or if it was something she was told she liked.

By rediscovering the authentic self, desired changes will begin to manifest, bringing on a new and passionate life.
