Learn how developing a positive attitude, better enthusiasm and passion for work leads to increased productivity, better job satisfaction and more job opportunities.

Some days it's difficult to be on-task and motivated even at the best job - even those who work from home and set their own schedules feel it sometimes. Negative attitudes just cause a vicious cycle that hinders productivity.

But it doesn't have to be that way! It's possible to keep a positive attitude at almost any job by following these tips.

Start Developing a Positive Outlook

A large part of making any job better is in improving relationships with colleagues and rediscovering the job's "good side":

  • If problems exist with the boss, managers or co-workers, try to determine whether a negative attitude towards them or towards the job itself is causing friction.
  • Praise co-workers who make any aspect of the job easier - sincere praise can be a highlight of that co-worker's day, lead them to help even more, and cheer up the person doing the praising, too!
  • Leave "home life" at home. Don't be the person that everyone avoids because they can't stop complaining about their spouse and kids, house, etc. Co-workers, even sympathetic ones, are not therapists.
  • Look for the positive aspects of the job - what's good about it, and what was the reason for applying there in the first place? By revisiting the "good side" of a job, it's possible to rekindle at least a little enthusiasm for it.

But improving the overall atmosphere of the job only goes so far. The next step is to tackle the specific tasks that are the most dreaded part of the day.

Staying Positive, Day by Day

After working on interpersonal relationships - which can make a huge difference in itself - and rediscovering the job's positive aspects, it's time to make the daily routine better:

  • Tackle the toughest tasks first. Avoiding problems usually makes them bigger problems, and no one likes a procrastinator. Tackling that difficult phone call first thing in the morning can provide a sense of accomplishment that helps with the rest of the day's work.
  • Invest enthusiasm and passion into routine tasks, and try to complete all work with excellence.
  • Remember that very few worries really come to pass, and the best way to deal with anxiety is to face one's fears and worries and work to prevent them.

These tips will help make the daily routine much more pleasant.

Find a Positive Attitude Mentor

Another proven way to become more positive on the job is to find a "positive attitude mentor" to model. Positivity isn't just nice to be around - it's also contagious. And it's something that managers remember when a promotion or raise comes up.

For those who work from home, this can be more difficult, but everyone has at least one upbeat friend who always has good things to say about other people and their own situation. Calling that friend more often can lead to a more positive outlook and increased productivity, too!
