Long term goals can be difficult to achieve. Part of the problem is maintaining daily actions towards goals in the face of changing seasons and yearly events.

One of the secrets to accomplishing long term goals is to plan how your year’s experiences will affect your daily actions required to reach your objectives. How will the seasons affect your motivation?

Consider your Goals

What steps do you want to take everyday that will help you to achieve victory? Look at your calendar and think about how these tangible actions need to change over the seasons. Think of obstacles to your goal(s) that may occur during the year and create a plan to overcome!

For example, one of your goals may be to spend more quality time with your family. You make a commitment that Saturdays you will have planned a family outing. How you envision this time will likely change over the year. In the summer you may want to take your family to outdoor festivals. In the winter you may want to try winter sports. Your family outings will be more fun and your quality time improved if you take advantage of seasonal actions. Also, you will need back up plans to accommodate seasonal challenges.

Spend some time envisioning how the steps you take towards your long term goal will change with the following yearly events. You will have other events that are personalized for your situation, include them in your planning. Go through your calendar for event reminders.

1.Winter Season

2.Spring Season

3.Summer Season

4.Fall Season

5.Religious Ceremonies and Customs

6.Vacations

7.Family Birthdays

8.Anniversaries

Make a Yearly Plan

Take a sheet of paper and as you consider the seasons, write which of your daily actions may be affected. Now write down what actions you will then take for the new season or yearly event.

For example, snow often derails people who exercise outside because they have not taken actions ahead of time to accommodate the changing weather.

Plan what kind of rewards will motivate you as the year changes. For example, in the summer you might reward yourself with a trip to the local lake when you have completed a full week of daily tasks towards your long term goal. In December, you might reward yourself with a special evening walk to enjoy the light displays.

When you are finished brain storming, mark on your calendar what daily actions need to change. Include any special rewards just after the seasonal adjustments take place. That will help to motivate you to stay on track as your daily habits change to accommodate yearly reality.
