Being more positive and assertive is not easy. For many self-doubt dominates and positive actions are impossible. Be more positive by assertive and combat self-doubt.

Like any personal characteristic the trait of being more positive can be learned. It is not fair that anyone should have to go through life constantly in doubt. Learn to be more positive by taking one small step.

Being More Positive

There are many reasons why a person develops a tendency toward the negative; a history of being bullied at school, difficulty with adolescence or domination by an aggressive partner — the list is endless. For some, positive thinking seems so easy, for others it becomes only a fantasy. Those who are positive seldom congratulate themselves for being so, but those who think negatively seem constantly aware of their failings.

Most people who are negative dream of being more positive, sometimes they are acutely aware of what they should be doing, but when it comes to the crunch it becomes impossible to take that final step, courage simply evaporates. But imagine, if you could, a life rooted in the positive and just think how much more enjoyable life would be.

One Small Step to Assert Yourself

Being assertive is like a drug, manage to be positive and assertive once and you will want more. It’s the first time that takes most effort. There are many books on the market dealing the problem, but after all the advice, too many people still can’t take the final leap.

Is there another way other than confronting the problem head on when the inner self is screaming to run and hide?

How to Trick the Mind into Positive Action

If you’ve tried self-discipline and still can’t be assertive try to trick the mind into positivism.

  • Think of one of your favourite films that features a hero or heroine that you admire. Then imagine a circumstance in your life that you would normally have difficulty dealing with. Nothing too extreme, just an everyday problem, perhaps being over charged in a store, or food served in a restaurant not cooked properly.

  • Think how your hero or heroine would deal with the situation. Would Julia Roberts in the film Erin Brockovich worry about challenging the price?

  • How about Bruce Willis in the Die Hard films. Would he think twice about sending the steak back?

  • Would Clint Eastwood in the Dirty Harry movies worry about the feelings of the parking attendant?
It might seem contrite to associate a serious problem with a film character, but to steel yourself to take that final step to positive action, sometimes acting the part can make the difference.

Next time you feel you should say or do something, think of your hero and heroine, take a deep breath and take that small step to freedom with, "Go ahead, make my day."
