Remember Names EffortlesslyRemembering Male Names, Female Names When Meeting New People
Remembering names can be difficult even for those with a great memory. Try these tips to help remember common or unusual names when meeting new people.
Going to a party or other social gathering can be a daunting experience for some. Meeting new people can be both fun and rewarding, but sometimes remembering names can be excruciating. This phenomenon is not uncommon, even people with the best memory can block out an initial introduction, losing the memory of a new name as soon as it is spoken. Learning how to retain immediate information, such as a name, not only helps with social skills but also improves memory functions overall. These tips can help improve the chances of not only remembering a new name short-term, but can encourage a long-lasting relationship between two new communicators. Ask the Person to Repeat the Name if NecessaryIn order to be able to remember a person’s name, it must be heard correctly in the first place. If there is any question as to what the person’s name is, or how it is pronounced, do not be afraid to ask the other party to repeat their name. It is very rare that a person will be insulted by this; as a matter of fact, most will be impressed that someone is showing such an interest. Say the Name AgainRepeat the person’s name a couple of times, first when introduced and then again during the conversation. This will help solidify the name in the mind. Small tasks such as this can help build cognitive memory. Repeating the person’s name also encourages interest in the occurring conversation, leading to a more productive introduction. Associate Common and Unique Names With a Familiar Face or ImageMost of the time, when a person meets someone, they know another person with the same name. Immediately conjure up similarities of a familiar person who shares the same name in order to help associate the new person with their name. If a person does not have features that can be correlated with a familiar face, try to associate their name with an outlandish mental image. For example, after meeting a person with the name Richard Bush, a unique mental image of money growing out of a bush (“Rich Bush”) could help solidify the name in one’s memory. Other Tips to Help Remember Common or Unusual NamesCarol Orsag Madigan, author of Life’s Big Instruction Book, also recommends learning a name before an introduction if possible. This especially works if there will be a large group of new people. Meeting new people can encourage social and business opportunities and remembering names is a crucial part of solidifying a new relationship. There is no need to be discouraged by lacking the ability to remember names naturally. Like anything else, with a bit of training, acquiring the skill of remembering names can be extremely fruitful.
