A helpful acronym, SMART, is an excellent way to help develop goals.
Some of the very best New Year's resolutions can fall to the way side because they lack clarity and contingency. To succeed, goals must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time oriented. Still, goal setting remains a difficult task for many that requires further guidance. Including the following three keys will not only clarify your ideas, but can also help maintain motivation and drive. Do It for the Right ReasonsThe best goals are selfish in the best possible way. They are goals that are meaningful to the person determining and setting the goals since they will need to be a motivating force for the long haul. It is important that goals matter most to the person who needs to make the changes, not made simply for the benefit of others. Determine an OutcomeThere needs to be a destination to support the planned journey. What is the complete outcome? What does the outcome look like? The best way to meet goals is to obtain a clear and concise picture of the finale. It must be realistic and meaningful to the person working toward that goal. A written explanation of the outcome is usually the best way to keep track of progress and to realize attainment. What is the Motivating Factor? From the President of the United States down through governors of states and principals of schools, few leaders can accomplish goals alone. There must be some motivating factor to keep leaders on track. Finding motivation is one of the top priorities in goal setting. When the need to succeed wanes and the objective fogs up, it is best to pick a motivating force that will again highlight the positive characteristics of the goal. Goals Should be ReasonableGoals should be objective. There should be a simple yes or no question answered. Leave no room for confusion and frustration. For example, a weight loss goal of wanting to look great by next year is not as precise as the desired result of 10% reduction in body weight by January 1st. The later is more readily identified and includes time factors. Relevant Goals Matter MostSuccess is only attainable when goals are relevant to the setter. Motivation is highly individualized, so goals must be realistic and factor in a person's desires, abilities and available support. The above tips will not only help clarify goals, but can also add motivation and direction so that giving up is not an option. Sources:
