Unique and Weird New Year's ResolutionsStrange Things That People Resolve For the New Year
Tired of the usual New Year's resolutions? Try these strange New Year's resolutions for the coming year.
As the countdown begins and people ring in the New Year, everyone is thinking about resolutions. What plans do they have for the new year? Perhaps it’s a plan to lose weight, to become fit, or to do something kind for others in the family. Maybe they plan to find a new job, a new career path, or even a new direction in life. Sometimes New Year's resolutions can be just plain weird. Here are a few unique and oddball resolutions. New Year's Resolution to Get Back to NatureHow about a resolution to go barefoot for the majority of the year? Or to live with zero impact on the earth? Colin Beaven is the "No Impact Man" who tries to live without a net impact on the earth – in New York City. Is it possible to source food from a 100 mile radius only, forgoing delicacies like wheat and necessities like chocolate? It wasn’t quite a New Year’s resolution, but on the first day of spring Alisa Smith and J.B. McKinnon from Vancouver did just that and then wrote about it in Plenty: One Man, One Woman, and a Raucous Year of Eating Locally (Three Rivers Press, 2008). Throw The Wealth Around This New Year’s EveIn a humorous article in Vanity Fair, Jamie Johnson writes about the resolutions of the rich. Buying up sports teams and building a baronic estate in Manhattan were two of the unrequited ideas. A foiled kidnapping was a resolution that didn't quite turn out as planned. One wealthy person's New Year's resolution that actually worked? Bringing a personal waiter to restaurants to ensure quick service. Sounds good, if the money is there! Resolve to Relive ChildhoodFor those who missed learning how to make sounds with their armpits and to blow on a blade of grass, this is the right resolution! Fashion blogger Gala Darling made a New Year’s resolution to become proficient at a party trick, to learn “weird stomach contortion or belching the alphabet.” Now that’s a goal worth pursuing. A New Year's Resolution to Break a World RecordLooking to set new goals? Work to get the most body piercings this year, make the world’s largest pancake, or jump on a pogo stick for the longest amount of time ever. For those who feel slightly less ambitious, there’s always the option to try to break the world record for the longest time spent in a rocking chair. Learn a Less-Than-Useful SkillWhile taxidermy and accordion-playing are definitely useful in some circles, they are not widely regarded as useful skills. Why not pursue one of these unusual skills? Learning a hobby that others find endearing, obsessive, or just plain odd may be just the right New Year’s resolution and it may actually lead to an interesting new life path. Adopt a New ViceNew Year’s resolutions often fail, so this resolution starts where the proactive resolutions leave off. Why not adopt a new bad habit for New Year’s? A bad habit like drinking wine or taking long, lazy walks may not actually be such a bad thing. Resolve to get in there and enjoy life! If the mundane New Year’s resolution just doesn’t cut it this year or if those practical, proactive and healthy resolutions have always flopped, try a strange New Year’s resolution instead. After all, more wine lovers and accordion players who break world records and eat local food can't be a bad thing for the world. At least they'll make the world a more strange and eclectic place, if not a healthy and more practical one.
